  Join ASHRAE Toronto for a tour of Canada's largest urban geoexchange field! At a depth equivalent to half the height of the CN Tower, U of T's geoexchange system doesn't utilize storage tanks or batteries; it stores heat in millions of tonnes of Toronto bedrock. Excess summer heat gets pushed 250 meters underground into shale and limestone formations beneath Front Campus. During winter, the process is reversed, and the stored thermal energy is recovered and upgraded using high-efficiency heat pumps to heat campus buildings, with a resulting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 17,000 tonnes annually.

  
  

  The University's Sustainability Office team will guide us through the recently completed Landmark Project at King's College Circle, including the parking garage, electric vehicle infrastracture, and viewing of the geoexchange mechanical room (visible through display windows). Following the tour, attendees will enjoy a light dinner followed by a technical presentation by Scott Hendershot, Senior Manager, Sustainability Office. Scott will give us an overview of the University's sustainability commitments, and share key design challenges, lessons learned, and insights gained throughout the project.

  Scott Hendershot leads the Sustainability Office at University of Toronto's St. George Campus, providing strategic oversight and championing initiatives that advance sustainable change across the university and beyond. Scott joined the U of T in 2021, and brings more than 30 years of diverse professional experience, including developing sustainability strategies within the aviation sector.

  EVENT SUMMARY

  Buildings are one of the largest energy end use sectors in countries around the globe. Concerns for the availability of energy supplies and the impact of energy use on the environment are driving a worldwide focus on energy end use reduction. In this push for dramatic changes in the energy use intensity of the building sector, it is essential that the fundamental importance of indoor environmental quality, particularly indoor air quality, not be lost. This presentation addresses: 1) the significance of indoor air quality in terms of its impact on health and productivity and associated costs; 2) the inseparable linkage between indoor air quality and building energy demands, including examples of efficient technologies for maintaining good indoor air quality; and 3) the need for an approach to building research, design, and operation that recognizes this connection.

  William P. Bahnfleth, Ph.D., P.E.

  
  

  William Bahnfleth is a professor of architectural engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in University Park, PA. Previously, he was a Senior Consultant for ZBA, Inc. in Cincinnati, OH and a Principal Investigator at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, IL. He holds a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and is a registered professional engineer. At Penn State, Dr. Bahnfleth teaches undergraduate courses in HVAC fundamentals and design and graduate courses in chilled water systems and indoor air quality His research interests cover a wide variety of topics including chilled water systems, thermal energy storage, and indoor air quality with a focus on control of bioaerosols. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 technical papers and articles and 18 books and book chapters.

  Dr. Bahnfleth is a fellow of ASHRAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). He was ASHRAE Society President in 2013-14. He chaired the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force and was the first chair of SSPC 241, which developed ASHRAE Standard 241-2023 Control of Infectious Aerosols. Dr. Bahnfleth’s ASHRAE awards include the Exceptional Service Award, the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award, the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit for teaching, the Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award, the Standards Achievement Award , the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, and ASHRAE’s highest honor, the F. Paul Anderson Award. He is also a recipient of the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society’s World-Class Engineering Faculty Award and is a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Illinois Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering.
