November 2, 2009 meeting is being held at Paradise Banquet Hall, 7601 Jane Street, Concord, Ontario.

Dinner Speaker and Topic:

This year’s ASHRAE Society’s Presidential theme is “Sustaining our Future by Rebuilding our Past,” highlighting the importance of HVAC retrofits of existing building systems to reduce overall energy usage. Which types of HVAC retrofits are most effective?

Retrofits to Constant Volume (CV) systems can lead to excellent energy savings according to Mr. Leon Kloostra, Senior Chief Engineer of Titus and our November meeting dinner speaker. The conversion of energy inefficient Constant Volume systems into economical, low pressure Variable Volume systems results in considerably reduced air volume and greatly reduced utility energy costs. Many older buildings have a huge potential for energy savings in this way. Savings are accomplished by reducing total air flow and by shifting maximum cooling air flow around the building as the sun moves during the day from East to West. Retrofits to other older HVAC systems will be presented including: Bypass Systems, Induction Systems, System Powered VAV, Multizone System and Low Pressure Single Duct Reheat. Alternative solutions using Under Floor Air Distribution, Chilled Beams, Displacement Ventilation, Fan Coils, Grilles, Registers and Diffusers will also be presented. Adding Variably Frequency Drives and terminal units are other good additional options to cut back building’s HVAC energy bill.

Leon Kloostra has been a member of ASHRAE since 1963 and became an inventor from the age of 19 when he registered his first U.S. patent for the TMS model diffuser still in production today. He holds two university degrees; one degree in Physics and a second degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has been with Titus for 52 years where he developed and patented numerous products including a pneumatic reset velocity controller. His latest is an automatic pattern changeover diffuser which does not require any external power. Leon Kloostra is a member of TC 5.3 Air distribution and a voting member on the Standards 170 committee as well as a contributing author to numerous ASHRAE standards and books. He is a leading contributor to the ASHRAE HVAC Design Manual for Hospitals and Clinics.

When he is not busy with ASHRAE or Titus Leon tours universities, where he speaks to students about the latest in air distribution practice, sharing his stories and experience.
