Scholarship Information Hub

ASHRAE offers a variety of scholarships to students, and they are divided into a range of categories. They are sorted by regions as well as academic programs, and range in value going up to $10,000 (USD)! ASHRAE offers various scholarships, for students in high school all the way to graduate school. All scholarship opportunities can be found on the ASHRAE Society Scholarship Program. 

Your chances can only get better if you apply, we have had numerous scholarship winners from here in the Toronto Chapter in recent years, get in touch if you're planning on applying!

You will likely need to engage a Toronto Chapter Officer or the Student Activities Chair to complete and submit an Evaluation Form on your behalf, prior to the deadline. So give your self ample time to make all the needed preparations!

ASHARE Toronto Chapter Scholarship

In 2023 ASHRAE Toronto has established a Chapter Student Scholarship, managed by ASHRAE Society! Each year 1 student can be selected to receive $3000 USD if the requirements are met.

Scholarships are available to full-time undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in a course of study that has traditionally been a preparatory curriculum for the HVAC&R profession. Additional criteria for each chapter scholarship is listed below. Applicants must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% and meet at least one of the following criteria.

The Toronto Chapter Scholarship is available to a qualified undergraduate mechanical, architectural, sustainability, building science engineering or engineering technology engineering students enrolled full-time at a post-secondary educational institute in the Greater Toronto Area.

Annual Application Deadline: December 1

Scholarships are awarded for the academic year following the application deadline beginning with the fall semester.

To be eligible, you must be enrolled in a program that meets the following criteria:

Applications and the following documents must be submitted on or before the application deadline to be considered:

  1. Official transcript of grades. Transcript must either be mailed, sent through an online electronic transfer service, or directly from your registrar’s office on your behalf. Photocopies will not be accepted.
  2. Three signed letters of recommendation as follows: one from an instructor or faculty advisor, a current or past employer, and another character reference (other than a family member). In cases where the institution has an ASHRAE student branch on campus, a letter from the faculty advisor of that branch may be one of the three letters of recommendation.

Selection criteria is the same as for all Undergraduate Scholarships as listed in the section below.

Undergraduate Scholarships 

Undergraduate scholarships range from $3000 to $10000 USD! As long as your institution has an ASHRAE Student Branch you're good to go! A list of the scholarships available can be found here. The deadline for these scholarships is December 1st

The scholarship applications can be done online here if you are 18+, please read through all required information carefully. Many of these applications require hard copies of reference letters and your sealed official transcript to be mailed into the head office, which may take some time to acquire and ship, so request these as soon as possible if you plan to apply. The Student Activities Chair will also be required to interview you and fill out an ASHRAE Scholarship Evaluation Form on behalf of the applicant, so don't forget to get in touch!

The Selection Criteria the applicant will be judged on to be eligible for the scholarships are listed below:

  1. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest and/or a class standing of no less than the top 30% evidenced by an official transcript of grades or written statement from a school administrator.

  2. Three letters of recommendation, including one from an instructor or faculty advisor, a current or past employer, and another character reference.  In the case of schools with an ASHRAE student branch, a letter from the faculty advisor of that branch may be one of the three letters of recommendation. 

  3. Potential service to the HVAC and/or refrigeration profession.

  4. Financial need.

  5. Excellence, Character, Leadership (Fully describe academic achievement and other leadership roles).

  6. Service to community & others (Detail participation in the arts/music, athletics, volunteerism, environmental/humanitarian groups, or other service organizations).

Submission requirements of the application as expressed by ASHRAE Society is shown below:

Graduate Student Grant-in-Aid Award Program

A Grant-in-Aid is a grant of funds to a full-time graduate student of ASHRAE-related technologies. It is awarded once each year for use in the following academic year. The award is for $10000 USD, given in 2 installments of $5000 each, first when being a successful applicant, and later when submitting a report on the results of your research.

In addition to the award of $10000 USD, if you author and present a peer-reviewed paper at an ASHRAE annual or winter meeting or submit an article that is published in the Science and Technology for The Built Environment, you are are eligible for an additional $1,500.00 honorarium!

Many Students in Toronto have received this award throughout the years. Approximately 10-25 are awarded each year by the ASHRAE Society. This award is based on merit, research quality and objectives and on your involvement within ASHRAE Society. Get in touch with your Faculty Advisor if you are interested!

To be considered for 2025-26 ASHRAE Student Graduate Grant-in-Aid Award, a completed application packet including an official transcript must be received at ASHRAE Headquarters by 8:00 AM EST March 3rd, 2025.
