RYERSON UNIVERSITY - STUDENT LEARNING CENTRE

THE FIVE YEAR FOLLOW UP

5 years ago, during the first dinner meeting of 2011, we showcased Ryerson University's new Student Learning Centre (Pre-Construction)

5 years later, now that the building has been occupied for over a year - ASHRAE Toronto’s first dinner meeting of 2016 will be showcasing the project Post-Construction accompanied by a facility tour.

The speaker (see "Guest Speaker" section below) will touch base on the following topics during the presentation:

- Evolution of the design from Pre-Construction to Post-Construction

* Design challenges

* Cost analysis

* How changes to programmes were dealt

- How the use of REVIT was vital during Construction

- Achievements!

Ryerson is one of the largest academic institutions in Toronto. It is located in the heart of downtown Toronto with notable landmarks such as the Ted Rogers School of Management, George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, Sam the Record Man, and Maple Leaf Gardens. The building design, which was collaboration between Zeidler Partnership Architects of Toronto and Snøhetta of Oslo, Norway and New York City, well reflect  Ryerson’s bold and innovative character.

The 155,463 square-foot, eight-storey learning centre features a bright, open, sustainable environment, which provides an outstanding atmosphere for students to study and engage with one another. A variety of learning environments, digital support and academic services promote student learning success and help foster a culture of collaboration and creativity. In the grade and below, Destination retail space will be available, creating a prominent commercial façade to Yonge Street traffic. In essence, the building is its own neighbourhood. It is a place of interaction, introspection and discovery for the Ryerson community.

Inspired by the historical gathering spaces of the Stoas and Agoras in ancient Greece where learning was inherently social, the lively SLC gives students eight uniquely-designed floors of generous space to meet, study, and exchange ideas. Conceived as a library without books, the design develops natural conditions for groups of people to interact while also offering areas for controlled and introspective study. Most importantly, it encourages students to make the space their own. The SLC is a library built for the digital age that encourages students to interact with their physical environment. Since its opening, the new campus landmark has become a popular hub filled with student activity from 7 AM to 1 AM each day.

Ryerson University’s new Student Learning Centre is targeted to be a LEED NC (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – New Construction) Gold Building. The Student Learning Centre was occupied early 2015. Construction began in 2011.
