NetZero: Next Steps
A continuity of last year's joint meeting
Toronto Chapter and Hamilton Chapter are excited to bring you the 2018 joint dinner meeting. Building on the 2017 joint dinner meeting we thought an appropriate theme for this year would be NetZero Energy Buildings. A sort of "action plan" or path forward from the targets set by the 2030 organization. We have arranged a talk from a distinguished lecturer who will share design and policy on NetZero Energy Buildings, along with a local case study of a NetZero Energy Building at Mohawk College.

NetZero Energy Buildings
As building regulations around the world continue to impose energy targets in order to reduce carbon emissions and to conserve fossil fuels, designers and contractors must provide buildings which can perform successfully with less energy aiming for Net Zero. The EU requires all buildings to be Net Zero by 2019, excluding plug and process loads, whilst the ASHRAE Board have proposed Net Zero INCUDING plug and process loads by 2030. This presentation will provide attendees with an overview of the issues involved and the potential design solutions to achieve Net Zero in a cost effective, practical manner using feedback from exemplar solutions.
New Zero strategies are proposed along with design tools, practical tips, and advice on suitable support information and case study examples.

Frank Mills

Frank Mills Consulting Limited
Frank Mills has spent the past 40 years applying best practice engineering to develop innovative and leading edge solutions to new and existing building projects ranging from individual buildings to multiple, neighbourhood and city wide developments. Frank received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Surrey, Guildford, England, where he completed a four year ‘thick’ sandwich degree course which included a full year’s industrial experience at the UK Atomic Energy Authority Labs and Workshops at Risley, UK. He received a Postgraduate Diploma (Masters) at Southbank University in Environmental Engineering where his studies covered all aspects of building services engineering and energy use in buildings and integrated architectural/engineering design.

Mohawk College:
The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation

RDH and TMP will be taking us through the case study Mohawk College's Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation. It is the college's flagship building and was constrained to strict energy consumption performace metrics, making the design NetZero Energy. The presentation will go through the building systems it took to get the building to such performance: lighting; envelope; and mechanical systems.

With over 8 years’ experience in sustainable design and construction support, Kristen brings an invaluable depth of knowledge to RDH Toronto. Her expertise includes consulting on energy efficient system design strategies for LEED and code compliance, and simulating building energy use. Kristen is familiar with working on both new construction and existing building types including healthcare, institutional, and residential.
Steve Kemp, LEED® Fellow

With nearly 20 years of building science experience, Steve’s expertise in sustainable buildings and LEED consulting is an asset to the RDH team. Skilled in numerous energy technologies including geothermal energy, smart lighting control, solar power generation, solar hot water, heat recovery and thermal storage, Steve is renowned as one of Canada’s top energy efficiency technology experts.
Steve leads RDH’s Energy and Sustainability team in Ontario, eastern Canada and the United States. His role involves providing strategic advice for early stage services (i.e. integration of energy, building enclosure, heating/cooling and ventilation) and participating in design charrettes. Additionally, he leads investigations of energy and mechanical performance in existing buildings, and whole building energy efficiency modelling and simulation for new and existing buildings.

Steve has more than 10 years of mechanical engineering consulting experience. He has worked on a broad range of projects including educational facilities, commercial office buildings, datacentres, athletic venues, retail developments, and food service establishments. Steve has a strong technical background and is dedicated to his client relationships. He offers innovative and practical solutions to design challenges. As Partner-in-Charge, Steve was responsible for all aspects of the Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation project.
