Course Summary
ASHRAE Standard 241 sets requirements for reducing the risk of airborne disease transmission indoors. This course provides background on airborne transmission and airborne infection risk mitigation and gives a comprehensive introduction to Standard 241. Key definitions and requirements for compliance, including equivalent clean airflow rates and air cleaner effectiveness and safety testing, are discussed in detail, and illustrated with examples. Assessment, planning, and operation and maintenance are summarized. Application of Standard 241 is covered by the companion course Is Your Building Ready? Applying ASHRAE Standard 241 Control of Infectious Aerosols – Facility Assessment, Planning, and Implementation.

Dr. Marwa Zaatari, Ph.D., Associate Member
William P. Bahnfleth, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow/Presidential Member ASHRAE, is a professor in the Department of Architectural Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University—University Park, PA. He holds a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and is a registered professional engineer. He is a Fellow of ASHRAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate. Dr. Bahnfleth is the author or co-author of more than 170 journal articles and 14 books/book chapters. He has served ASHRAE in a variety of capacities, including Student Branch Advisor, Chapter Governor, Technical Committee and Standing Committee Chair, Director-at-Large, Vice President, Treasurer, and 2013-14 Society President. He is the chair of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force. His ASHRAE awards include the Exceptional Service Award, the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit for teaching, and the F. Paul Anderson Award, ASHRAE’s highest individual award.
Dr. Marwa Zaatari is Chief Science Officer at D ZINE Partners and co-Chair of enVerid Systems Advisory Board. She leads the research and development of “Air as a Service” around heat exchanger coils, ventilation, filtration, and IAQ measurements. Her work continues to advance building science methods in assessing performance-based procedures to design and operate buildings to optimize energy and people efficiency. Dr. Zaatari is a Member of Board of Directors at USGBC, a Member of USGBC Green Schools, School Air Quality Leaders Network: Technical Advisory Committee, and is a member of several ASHRAE committees.
Dr. Zaatari earned a PhD in Architectural and Environmental Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin with a focus on the built environment and a master’s degree in engineering management from The American University of Beirut, Lebanon with a focus on energy management.

This course will be presented through the GoToWebinar or WebEx platform. Course registrants will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions on how to log in to the course and how to obtain the course materials. The course presentation will be made available prior to the course date. Attendees will receive the 3 hour online course, a copy of presentation and 30 days access to recorded version.
Electronic copies of the course evaluation form and Certificates of Attendance referencing Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be made available to the course attendees.
