Event Summary


Professionals in the industry are often challenged with multiple hydronic solutions whether it is a new construction or retrofit opportunity with ever growing buildings stock, to meet climate goals. Our experienced and diverse group of panelists will debate on what the optimal piping material is for hydronic systems. The debate will touch on a multitude of topics and applications. So which will it be, Metal or Plastic?


Panelists for Plastic Hydronics Piping

Teresa Jiang, B.A.Sc.

Business Development Manager - Uponor Canada

Teresa Jiang, B.A.Sc. Business Development Manager at Uponor Canada. Teresa started her Engineering career in construction products on the certification and codes standards side of the business. She has had 10 years of experience testing and certifying construction materials of all kinds used in the building industry. Her interest in safety as well as contribution through personal interactions lead her to her current post at Uponor for the last 9 years. As the Business Development Manager at Uponor, she has had the pleasure of representing and educating in a revolutionary material used in the transport of water all over the world including Europe and North America. She has also actively participated in her local ASHRAE Toronto chapter as a board member and chair of the YEA committee for 2 years.


Mike Mercurio

Technical Sales Rep - Mechanical Piping Systems - IPEX Inc.

Mike entered the industry in 1988 employed as Purchasing Agent., before advancing to Outside Sales for Industrial, Plumbing & Heating, and Fire Protection products in the Greater Toronto sales region.  Mike has spent the last 25 years as Technical Sales for Mechanical Products, and next year - 2024 will mark a 34 year milestone with IPEX.  Mike has been very active over the years with Mechanical Contractors Association of Toronto and an active participant in the local Toronto area chapters of HRAI and Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association. He is also the current chair of the IPVF Council (Industrial Pipe, fittings & Valves Council). Mike and his wife Cathy reside in Mississauga and have been married for almost 34 years. They are now empty nesters and have 2 adult children…. One of which is getting married later this year.


James Paschal, P.E., CPD, LEED AP

Chief Technology Officer - Aquatherm

Mr. Paschal received his BS in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University, and MSE in Plastics Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a registered professional engineer, ASPE Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) and LEED accredited professional. He has over 30 years of experience in the plastic piping industry, including 14 years with NSF International in the plastics and drinking water programs and 13 years as a consulting engineer in plastic piping.

For the past 6 years, Mr. Paschal has held the position of Chief Technical Officer for Aquatherm, a manufacturer of polypropylene piping systems used in plumbing, hydronic, RO/DI and chemical process systems.

Peter Turk, P.Eng.

Sales Representative - Victaulic

Peter Turk graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science in mechanical engineering.   He has been an ASHRAE member since 2006 and was the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter President in 2017-2018.  Peter began working for Victaulic in 2005 and has enjoyed being in the HVAC industry ever since.   He is passionate about sustainable system design and energy efficiency. 


Kevin Sawyer, H BComm

Technical Sales Manager - Viega LLC


For over 120 years Viega has been providing innovative piping solutions and is now the world leader in press joining technology. A 30-year technical sales professional, Kevin joined Viega 16 years ago as employee number two in Canada. He has played an instrumental role in the introduction and adoption of press joining technology in Canada. Working with both engineers and contractors, on projects in commercial, institutional, and multifamily residential project


Eric Vainio, P.Eng., P.E.

Director of Engineering - Major Projects at Modern Niagara


Eric Vainio graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and has worked in the industry as a Consulting Engineer and Design Build Contractor for over 20 years. He is passionate about designing large infrastructure projects with major capital and long term cost implications, including energy efficiency, maintenance and lifecycle considerations. Eric is currently working on multiple healthcare projects across Canada.

Principal - Smith + Andersen

Kurt Monteiro, B.A.Sc., P.Eng.,LEEP AP, HFDP,HBDP Principal, Smith + Andersen. Over a career that spans more than 20 years, Kurt Monteiro has established a reputation that carefully balances innovation with client satisfaction. Kurt has spent the majority of his career with Smith + Andersen and, over the last decade, has focused on healthcare and laboratory projects- particularly large P3 projects and renovations to existing healthcare facilities. Kurt has been an active member of the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter for many years, serving on the board of governors and currently acting as President-Elect of the Chapter's Executive Committee. He is a voting member of the ASHRAE Certification Committee, as well as a provisional corresponding member for several healthcare and laboratory technical committees. Kurt is also an active member of the CSA Medical Gas technical sub-committee that published CSA-Z7396.1 Medical Gas Pipeline Systems. His leadership and design acumen frequently leads to award-winning work, including first place in the New Healthcare Facilities category at the 2017 ASHRAE Society Technology Awards for the $1.2-billion Humber River Hospital project in Toronto. Most recently, Kurt led the Smith + Andersen team that won first place in the New Healthcare Facilities category at the 2020 ASHRAE Society Technology Awards for their work on Peel Memorial Integrated Health Centre in Brampton- the greenest ambulatory care center in the province.
