We ask that you pre-register for the dinner at your earliest convenience online at www.torontoashrae.com, select “Meeting Registration and Calendar” from the left tab and then “Register” button for the ASHRAE Toronto - January 2011 Dinner Meeting. You may also still register through the ASHRAE chapter office (Sabrina Tai - 905 602 4714 or stai@hrai.ca). Please indicate at time of registration if you have any specific meal requirements. There will always be a vegetarian option, simply notify us at time of registration. There will be an additional $10 service charge for individuals who show up at the door without registering online and spaces will not be guaranteed.

Maple Leaf Gardens Redevelopment
A new Ryerson University Sports and Recreation Centre is being built at Maple Leaf Gardens, a historic Toronto landmark and one of the most famous buildings in Canada. The revitalization of the Gardens is a joint effort involving Ryerson University, Loblaw Companies Limited, and the federal government. Ryerson students have been at the forefront of making the new centre possible. In a spring 2009 referendum, students voted overwhelmingly to increase their athletic fees to support a new sports and recreation centre. The fees will provide $20 million for the new facility. On Dec. 1, 2009 the government of Canada announced that it was pledging $20 million to the project, and Loblaw and Ryerson announced that they would launch a joint fundraising effort for another $20 million, including a $5 million contribution from Loblaw. The facility will be completed by March, 2011.

Ian Hamilton, P.Eng, MBA
Ian Hamilton is the Asst. Vice President, Campus Planning & Facilities of Ryerson University and sits on the Building Committee for the Maple Leaf Gardens renovation project. Ian has a degree in Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering, from McMaster University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Toronto specializing in General Management. As well, Ian has a Real Estate Broker’s license from the Ontario Real Estate Association to help support his role of managing Ryerson’s portfolio of grounds and buildings. Currently, Ian is the President of the Ontario Association of Physical Plant Administrators, the industry association representing all of the Ontario universities’ maintenance and operations departments. Prior to coming to Ryerson University, Ian was the General Manager of the CBC portfolio for Profac Management Group responsible for CBC’s buildings and business services nationally. From 1991 to 1996, Ian worked in the City Property Department of the old City of Toronto in a variety of leadership positions culminating in the position of Acting Deputy Commissioner for the City Property Department responsible for the operations, maintenance, cleaning and construction of the city’s buildings.
Team North - Ryerson University - 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition Entry
Dr. Alan Fung, together with former Ryerson University students, Toktam Saeid and Aya Dembo, will be providing an overview of Team North's competition entry into the 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition.
In October 2009, Team North, a consortium of University of Waterloo, Ryerson University and Simon Fraser University, competed in the US Department of Energy (D.O.E.) 2009 Solar Decathlon competition. Team North’s mission was to design and deliver North House, an energy efficient solar-powered home while training Canada’s next generation of leaders in sustainable design. In North House, the PV system on the roof was the primary energy generation, complimented by a custom PV cladding system on the south, east and west facades. A solar assisted heat pump system including a three-tank heat transfer and storage system, the slightly tilted evacuated-tube solar thermal collectors on the roof and a variable capacity heat pump met the hot water and space heating demands. A second variable capacity heat pump was utilized for space cooling. The presentation presents the HVAC system with the real-time results as measured during the duration of 10-day competition in Washington DC. Despite the fact that the house experienced severe weather changes during the competition, it was identified
as being net-positive while maintaining the required level of thermal comfort as evidenced by the 3
rd place finish in the Comfort Zone contest, 3
rd place finish in Net-Metering , and ranked 4
th place in the final competition.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR THE DINNER MEETING. The Career Fair will commence at 12:00PM and will wrap up at 6:30PM, just in time to head to the dinner meeting.
