EVENT SUMMARY

Buildings are one of the largest energy end use sectors in countries around the globe. Concerns for the availability of energy supplies and the impact of energy use on the environment are driving a worldwide focus on energy end use reduction. In this push for dramatic changes in the energy use intensity of the building sector, it is essential that the fundamental importance of indoor environmental quality, particularly indoor air quality, not be lost. This presentation addresses: 1) the significance of indoor air quality in terms of its impact on health and productivity and associated costs; 2) the inseparable linkage between indoor air quality and building energy demands, including examples of efficient technologies for maintaining good indoor air quality; and 3) the need for an approach to building research, design, and operation that recognizes this connection.

SPEAKER

William P. Bahnfleth, Ph.D., P.E.

William Bahnfleth is a professor of architectural engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in University Park, PA. Previously, he was a Senior Consultant for ZBA, Inc. in Cincinnati, OH and a Principal Investigator at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, IL. He holds a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and is a registered professional engineer. At Penn State, Dr. Bahnfleth teaches undergraduate courses in HVAC fundamentals and design and graduate courses in chilled water systems and indoor air quality His research interests cover a wide variety of topics including chilled water systems, thermal energy storage, and indoor air quality with a focus on control of bioaerosols. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 technical papers and articles and 18 books and book chapters.

Dr. Bahnfleth is a fellow of ASHRAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). He was ASHRAE Society President in 2013-14. He chaired the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force and was the first chair of SSPC 241, which developed ASHRAE Standard 241-2023 Control of Infectious Aerosols. Dr. Bahnfleth’s ASHRAE awards include the Exceptional Service Award, the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award, the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit for teaching, the Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award, the Standards Achievement Award , the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, and ASHRAE’s highest honor, the F. Paul Anderson Award. He is also a recipient of the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society’s World-Class Engineering Faculty Award and is a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Illinois Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering.

Catalyst was designed for change. Aligning owner, architect, and engineer around a shared vision, the project balances the demands of specialized laboratory infrastructure, occupant safety, operational resilience, and energy performance with the need for long-term adaptability. Cary Solomon

Cary Solomon is the Founder and Managing Partner of Seeker Labs based in Toronto Canada. Mr. Solomon is a real estate executive with over 30 years of experience in development, construction, and asset management across North America. Cary has led the delivery of more than 8 million square feet of high-rise, commercial office, and retail projects in Canada and the United States, with experience across multiple asset classes.

He had the vision to found Seeker Labs, with its single purpose, to address the need for private sector, purpose-built life sciences infrastructure in Canada. Through partnerships with institutional and ecosystem stakeholders, Seeker Labs is leading the development of lab and innovation facilities that support research and commercialization and contribute to the growth of Canada's life sciences sector.

Robert Mariani, P.Eng.

Robert Mariani, P.Eng. is a Partner and mechanical engineering leader in DIALOG’s Toronto studio with more than 20 years of experience designing high-performance healthcare, research, and laboratory environments. His work spans complex institutional and commercial facilities where occupant well-being, operational reliability, energy performance, and resilience must come together. Robert has led teams and the delivery of projects from early concept and planning through detailed design, and construction. His expertise encompasses HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, medical gas, laboratory gases, and building automation systems. Through his work, Robert brings a practical, integrated perspective to the evolving challenges facing healthcare and research facilities - advancing building performance and sustainability while keeping people, operations, and long-term value at the centre of the design.

Jay Levin

Jay Levine is a national leader in the programming, planning, and design of specialized pharmaceutical, biotechnology, GMP-compliant, and academic research facilities. With project experience across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland, Jay brings deep sector expertise to life sciences, translational research, and advanced manufacturing environments.

His portfolio spans R&D laboratories, pilot plants, testing laboratories, and GMP production facilities. His work is distinguished by the integration of architecture and engineering, balancing complex technical and regulatory requirements with capital cost, operational efficiency, flexibility, and long-term adaptability.

As DIALOG’s Science+Technology Practice Area Chair, Jay leads a cross-Canada team delivering high-performance, future-ready environments for discovery, innovation, and production. In 2021, Jay merged his former practice, NXL Architects, with DIALOG, expanding the reach and impact of his specialized science and technology practice.

Course Summary

Artificial intelligence is impacting the hardware and software ecosystem, driving significant changes that put data centers at a risk of becoming inadequate to handle the new requirements. The rapid pace of innovation is increasing the difficulty in planning for future hardware needs without over investment or premature obsolescence. To achieve maximum performance while reducing energy consumption, data centers must be designed and operated by professionals whose knowledge evolves as quickly. Today’s data center environments have an infinite number of combinations, increasing the risk of overgeneralizing by designers and operators. Demand for IT services that are lower cost, more energy-efficient, provide more storage, and offer more computing capabilities is resulting in continued, significant changes in hardware and as a result its operating conditions. This is leading to the need for more mixed-use environments, combining general performance computing and high-performance computing. This ASHRAE course examines data center best practices by focusing on ASHRAE’s evolving thermal guidelines for data processing environments, including the latest guidance around liquid cooling. While there are opportunities to save energy in data centers, understanding of equipment trends, performance measurements, and effectiveness are critical to the principal objective: Data integrity and facility uptime.

Instructor

Dustin W. Demetriou, Ph.D., Member ASHRAE

Dr. Demetriou is a Senior Technical Staff Member and leads sustainability and data center innovation for IBM Infrastructure. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University. This role includes a broad range of responsibilities including product sustainability and lifecycle assessment, data center infrastructure management, workload carbon accounting, and future trends and regulations. His research interests include the analysis, application, and optimization of thermal management and energy conversion systems, particularly in the areas of high-density data centers, high-performance buildings, and advanced electronics cooling technologies. He has co-authored four books in the ASHRAE Datacom Series, authored or coauthored over thirty journal and peer-reviewed conference publications, and has been granted forty-three United States patents. He is a globally recognized expert in the field of thermal management and data center energy efficiency and has taught courses on these subject around the world. Dr. Demetriou is the current Vice Chair of the ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 (TC 9.9) IT Subcommittee and the past Chair of ASHRAE TC 9.9 on Mission Critical Facilities, Data Centers, Technology Spaces, and Electronic Equipment. He also serves on the Executive Committee for the IEEE Intersociety Conference on Thermal and Thermomechanical Phenomena in Electronic Systems (ITherm). His work has been awarded numerous honors, including the ASHRAE Willis H. Carrier Award, All-University Doctoral Prize at Syracuse University, IEEE TCPMT Best Paper Award, ASME Journal of Electronics Packaging Best Paper Award, ASME InterPACK Best Paper Award in Data Centers and Energy Efficient Electronic Systems, and the Best Paper in the International Journal of Building Simulations. He also holds a MS in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Manhattan College.

Course Materials and Continuing Education Credits

This course will be presented through the GoToWebinar or Zoom platform. Course registrants will receive a confirmation e-mail with instructions on how to log in to the course and how to obtain the course materials. The course presentation will be made available prior to the course date. Attendees will receive the 2 hour online course, a copy of presentation and 30 days access to recorded version.

Electronic copies of the course evaluation form and Certificates of Attendance referencing Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be made available to the course attendees.
