Title: “New, now, and next in urban sustainability: From green buildings to conscious cities”

Description:

This presentation will provide an overview of the latest industry trends, research, and issues related to green buildings and urban sustainability. It will introduce new metrics and indicators for measuring building performance, examine the role that existing buildings can play in helping to advance local and regional carbon reduction goals, and discuss why human health and wellness is emerging as a key priority in the buildings industry. The presentation will also take a closer look at some of the emerging urban sustainability initiatives and projects currently being planned for Toronto.


Bio: 

Mark Bessoudo is Manager of Research specializing in Sustainability & Energy with the global engineering consultancy WSP. Mark helps to create healthy and high-performance buildings and communities by integrating sustainability at multiple scales, including new and existing buildings, real estate portfolios, infrastructure, and master plans. He has experience using various sustainability frameworks and rating systems such as LEED, WELL, Living Building Challenge, and EcoDistricts.

He has written about the science and philosophy of green buildings and urban sustainability for several publications including Issues in Science & Technology, New Philosopher, Canadian Architect, Conscious Cities Journal, Sustainable Building & Design, and ASHRAE Journal. In 2016 Mark was awarded the WSP Global Innovator Award for his thought leadership on the role of philosophy in the engineering profession. 

Mark is a LEED Accredited Professional and Professional Engineer. He holds a B.Eng. in biological engineering from Dalhousie University and a M.A.Sc. in building engineering from Concordia University.


ASHRAE 2018 Winter Conference - Chicago


Interested in attending the ASHRAE Winter Conference and AHRI show held in January 2018 in Chicago? Toronto chapter will be sponsoring multiple students to attend the conference. 

Students considered for the scholarship will be assessed on their involvement in ASHRAE and general interest in the HVAC/R industry. To be considered students must;

●   Be ASHRAE Society and Toronto Chapter Student Members

●   Have a valid passport that will not expire within 6 months of travel date

●    Agree to pay for their own trip expenses and keep all receipts that man be reimbursed including:

○      Transportation, food (no alcohol), accommodations and ASHRAE related events.

Please note students will have to pay for part of their expenses.

●    Attend   the   mandatory   student   events   in   order   to   be   considered   for reimbursement.

●   Upon return, compile their receipts and submit an expense form to the Toronto Chapter.
